Anderson v1 pg382 - letter #378

I am returning very much belated thanks for all the nice delicacies which the worthy ladies have sent me to nibble.  As I was constantly unwell in Vienna I had finally to take refuge here.  Meanwhile better late than never.  So please say all kinds of pleasant things on my behalf to the Reverend Ursulines.  By the way, their excessive gratitude is really quite unnecessary.  For I am grateful to anyone who has enabled me to be of some use here and there by means of my art – As soon as you wish to make use again of my small talents for the benefit of the R[everend] L[adies], just write to me.  I have a new symphony ready for that purpose; and as the Archduke Rudolph has had it copied, the Ladies will not be put to any expense – and later on perhaps I shall manage something else for voices – but I certainly don’t want you to ascribe to any kind of vanity or ambition my readiness to serve the R[everend] L[adies]; that indeed would cut me to the heart; -- Yet if the R[everend] L[adies] would like to feel that they are performing some kind deed for my benefit, then let them include me with their pupils in their pious prayers – I send them my best respects and I assure you of my regard –

                                                                              Your friend
                                                                                              Ludwig van Beethoven

I am staying here for a few weeks more.  Write to me if necessary.
